King was pronounced dead at 7:05 pm at St. Joseph’s Hospital after emergency chest surgery.
On this episode of This Day In History, Tony and Armand recount the tragic and senseless murder of the leader of the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As King stood on the balcony outside room 306 of the Lorraine Motel, James Earl Ray took aim with a high-powered rifle, striking Dr. King in the right cheek and severing his spinal cord. King was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Memphis where he was pronounced dead just an hour later. Plus, 1965 sees the birth of actor Robert Downey Jr., and the world welcomes actor Heath Ledger in 1979.
