“Video Killed the Radio Star” airs at 12:01 AM on August 1, 1981, to become the first music video shown on MTV.
On this episode of This Day In History, Tony and Armand tell us about the very first music video to be shown on MTV on this day in 1981.
The Buggles hit single, “Video Killed the Radio Star“, was recorded as a single on September 7, 1979, by Island Records. As the title of the song suggests, the video shows how the effect of modern technology could impact the way future generations would come to listen to and appreciate music.
Also on this day, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is formed in 1957, Charles Whitman (“Texas Tower Sniper”) kills 16 people at the University of Texas at Austin in 1966, and the Great Flood of 93 reaches its peak on this day.
Plus, one of our great hosts, Armand, is born on this day! Happy birthday, Armand!
