In 1954, Time Inc. launched Sports Illustrated to a nationwide audience and soon turned this magazine into the most widely read sports magazine in the United States. Using such innovations as color photos, scouting reports, and in-depth reporting across all major sports, ‘SI’ became a powerhouse with over 3 million subscribers.
Plus, T. E. Lawrence is born on this day in 1888, Steve Carell is welcomed into the world in 1962, and baseball legend Babe Ruth succumbs to cancer at age 53 in 1948.
